Each year since 1998, AlburyCity has applied to the NSW State Government for a half day public holiday (from 12 noon) to be declared for the Albury Gold Cup. It is estimated that the economic benefit of the Albury Gold Cup is up to $8.5m, with around 30% of attendees coming from outside the region.
The Albury Gold Cup has increased in significance over a number of years and has gained recognition as the premier event on the country racing calendar, with around 20,000 people now attending the one day carnival.
AlburyCouncil is proposing to seek approval for a ministerial declaration for a half day public holiday on the Albury Cup Day for two years and for that public holiday application to be for a half day from 12 noon.
Under the national employment standards contained in the Fair Work Act 2009, any local public holiday would apply to all employees within the relevant area for which the local public holiday was declared, in this case Albury City Council area. Employee entitlements regards the local public holidays would be in accordance with the specific industrial arrangements that apply to their employment.
